Australian legislators are looking to merge provincial approaches to subsidizing the racing industry, and revenue from online casinos and online sports betting sites seems to be the target. But operators of Internet gambling sites declare that their contributions are too high and more long-term and practical solutions need to be discussed.

Elmer Funke-Kupper, managing director of Tabcorp emphatically said that they pay the industry more than what their entire company makes in a year, and continue to give the racing industry record amounts of money every year. Kupper states that a current wave of prosperity will sooner or later end, placing online casinos in economic risk, if the horseracing challenge found no solution before then. It was alarming to note that Tabcorp paid $600 million in taxes to racing subsidies, while the company’s net profit was less than $500 million, a sad state of affairs indeed!

Online gaming owners are fretting and fuming over the fees demanded by the government in New South Wales. Both Betfair and Sportsbet say the New South Wales model cannot be used for national policy, insisting that a percentage of revenue of around 10 percent is fair, but nothing more! Andrew Twaits, CEO of Betfair, says taxing viable gaming operations doesn’t solve the problem of racing’s fading popularity there is more to it that catches the eye. He says racing is on the verge of becoming a “niche gambling product” and this could be one of the reasons behind the need for financial support. Twaits reiterated that unless racing focuses on trying to regain its mainstream status in society, there could really be no answer to this growing issue.
