Dealware’s lawmakers have finally decided to vote down a bill that would have approved sports betting in the First State. Delaware is one of the four states in the United States that bans sports betting completely. Governor Jack Markell had suggested expanding gambling to sports betting.

He hoped that the State could raise additional income of estimated $55 million in revenue. He had taken the successful implementation of online sports betting in the neighboring states as an example to emphasize and illustrate his point of view. On Tuesday night, however, the proposal had been turned down. The 60 percent majority could not be accomplished. The Delaware House representatives voted with 23 votes in favor for the new gambling bills, 15 votes were against it and three abstained.

The governor had in mind to expand gambling at Delaware’s 3 racetracks, respectively casinos. In return a larger share of slot machine games revenue was intended to prevent extra cuts in the fiscal budget if the upcoming year 2010. Jake Markell has already to deal with an eight percent reduction of the salary of all state workers.

The bill had to face a strong lobby of racetracks and casinos in the state of Delaware. They claimed the proposal of expanding sports betting would malign their business. Pattu Key, who is the managing director and CEO of Harrington Raceway, explained on Tuesday that the casinos would not make any money from sports betting. In contrast, the slot machine revenue would actually go down.

Representatives of the National Football League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association had also a strong lobby against Jake Markell’s proposal. They are afraid that sports betting would badly influence the true and pure spirit of sports competitions.
