    Calculating Casino Game House Edges

    Category: Casino Online Bet

Constantly we come across the word ‘house edge’ and keep wondering what does this signify and how does it impact your gambling time! The house edge is the average percent of each bet placed that is rightfully due to the online casino! In some instances the casino wins and the players lose and vice versa! On averaging out the wins and the losses you will come to the conclusion that the casino always makes profits and that’s how they remain in business!

Different casinos games like casino roulette online or casino craps online attract different house edges also house edges vary from game to game. It is the responsibility of the player to decipher which games carry what percentage of house edge and then play accordingly. A few examples are illustrated below:

In a game of craps, the wager ‘any 7’ wins if the total of the two dice rolled out amounts to ‘7’. To calculate this house edge you have to calculate the chances of getting a 7. When two dice are rolled the total result is 36.6 and the chances of getting a 7 is 6/36 or 1/6. The chances of not getting a ‘7’ is 5/6. The next move would be to calculate the expectation. Expectation is a numerical term for what the player can expect to either lose or win over a period of time.

‘Any 7’ pays out at 4 to 1 in almost all online casinos. If the player bets $1 and succeeds he gets $4 and in the event of losing then he loses the $1 he bet on.

    Given that the probability of winning is P and the odds are W to 1, the expectation E is given by E = P*W - (1 - P)*1. For “Any 7″ bet P = 1/6 and W = 4. Therefore E = (1/6)*4 + (5/6)*1 = -(1/6) = - 0.17

The end result of this illustration is that for every dollar you bet on you can expect to lose 17 cents in due course. Therefore the house edge is merely the arithmetical value of the expectation per dollar betted on, displayed as a percentage! Or when the expectation is calculated for a bet of $1 the house edge is the mathematical value of the expectation, displayed as a percentage! To conclude ‘Any 7’ wager in craps will attract a house edge of 17%.
