Sports betting revenues are hitting a new ceiling with amounts reaching approximately 4 billion euro in 2009, with more than 3,989 million Euro bets placed along with a 2.1% increase collected from the 2008 sector. In 2008, there was a 50% increase in sports bets and over the 2,591 million euro bets placed in 2007. On the other hand, online sports betting has done better, with total revenue of 1207.6 million euro, representing a hike of 12.9% over the 1069.7 million received in 2008. Online wagering in 2009 has increased to 30.3% of the total amount collected.

The Campania region stood out with takings as huge as 542 million euro in the fixed amount sports wagering industry last year. Lazio was second on the chart with 361.8 million euro with Lombardy coming in third with 318.5 million euro. These three regions reached a total of 30% bets placed in Italy in 2009. The revenue status was equally good in Puglia collecting as much 278.5 million euro and in Sicily with 254.7 million euro. Revenue of a little less than 10 million euro was recorded in Molise (8.4) and Valle d’Aosta collected 2.4 million euro.

The regional data rankings would change considerably when 2009 is compared with that of 2008. Two of the most important places that have depicted the greatest growth percentage in fixed amount sports wagering profits are Sardinia with 14.9% and Friuli Venice Giulia with 14.1% increase. Liguria, Veneto and Marche are equally doing well. Piemonte showed takings of – 0.2% while Campania fell to 7.4%. Molise decreased to – 15.8%.

However, in the South 1,196.3 million euro bets were placed which is a 43.1% with the North standing at revenue more than 876.9 million euro or 31.5%. The Centre stood as 708.2 million (25.4%). The Champions League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United received bets worth 8.4 million euro.
